How to set up email on your device

How to make sure email links in First Thursday open the right app on your device

Written by Callum Hale-Thomson

In First Thursday, when using actions like emailing a contact or sending an offer, your device opens your default email app, pre-filled with the right recipient and subject.

For this to work, your default mail app needs to be set up with the email address you use for gallery work (the same one connected to your First Thursday account).

On a computer

Option 1: Gmail in Chrome

  • Step 1. Open Chrome and go to chrome://settings/handlers in the address bar.

  • Step 2. Make sure Sites can ask to handle protocols is switched on.

  • Step 3. Go to mail.google.com and make sure you're signed in with your gallery email address.

  • Step 4. Look for the handler icon (a small diamond shape) in Chrome's address bar. Click it and select Allow.

  • Step 5. Done. The next time you click an email link in First Thursday, it will open a new Gmail compose window, pre-filled and ready to send.

Don't see the handler icon? Try reloading Gmail. If you previously clicked "Don't allow", go back to chrome://settings/handlers, remove Gmail from the blocked list, and try again.

Option 2: Apple Mail (Mac)

  • Step 1. Open the Mail app on your Mac.

  • Step 2. Go to Mail → Settings (or Preferences on older macOS) from the menu bar.

  • Step 3. On the General tab, find Default email reader and set it to Mail.

  • Step 4. Make sure your gallery email account is added. Go to Settings → Accounts to check, or add a new account via Mail → Add Account.

  • Step 5. Clicking an email link in First Thursday will now open a new compose window in Apple Mail, with your gallery account as the sender.

Option 3: Outlook (Mac or Windows)

  • Step 1. Open Outlook and make sure your gallery email account is signed in.

  • Step 2 (Mac). Go to Outlook → Settings → General and tick Make Outlook the default application for email.

  • Step 2 (Windows). Open Settings → Apps → Default apps. Search for Mail and select Outlook from the list.

  • Step 3. Email links from First Thursday will now open a new compose window in Outlook.

Tip: If you have multiple accounts in Outlook, set your gallery email as the default "From" address under Outlook Settings → Accounts → Default account.

On iPhone

On iPhone, mailto: links open whichever app is set as your default mail app. You can use Gmail, Apple Mail, or Outlook.

Option 1: Gmail

  • Step 1. Install the Gmail app from the App Store and sign in with your gallery Google account.

  • Step 2. Open the Settings app, scroll down, and tap Gmail.

  • Step 3. Tap Default Mail App and select Gmail.

  • Step 4. Done. Tapping an email link in First Thursday will now open Gmail, ready to send.

Option 2: Apple Mail

  • Step 1. Open Settings and tap Mail, then Accounts.

  • Step 2. If your gallery email isn't listed, tap Add Account and follow the sign-in flow.

  • Step 3. Apple Mail is the system default on iPhone, so no further setup is needed. Email links in First Thursday will open Mail automatically.

If another app was previously set as default, go to Settings → [that app] → Default Mail App and switch it back to Mail.

Option 3: Outlook

  • Step 1. Install Microsoft Outlook from the App Store and sign in with your gallery Microsoft 365 or Exchange account.

  • Step 2. Open Settings, scroll down, and tap Outlook.

  • Step 3. Tap Default Mail App and select Outlook.

  • Step 4. Email links in First Thursday will now open Outlook on your iPhone, using your gallery account as the sender.
